In one early set, close-up monochrome portraits, surreal face edits, and a smoky flame-like hand all come through with high contrast and strong surface detail, which lines up with Midjourney's claims about coherence and prompt following.

Automotive experiments are another strong showing. Lloyd's tests produced rally-action frames, motion-blurred side profiles, and stylized Porsche scenes that feel more cinematic than typical prompt-only car renders; later follow-up tests pushed that further into split-screen car studies, sneaker motion concepts, and glossy portrait experiments. But the transition is not seamless: in side-by-side comparisons, one creator said their favorite V5.2 prompt still gives the "unique worlds" they want, while V8 outputs skewed more abstract, and a follow-up reply says bluntly that old prompts do not work the same on V8.

Midjourney is openly describing V8 as a model that may need new prompting habits. The official notes recommend longer, more specific prompts, heavier use of moodboards or srefs, and --raw for photos or a more controlled look; they also say the default aesthetics are still being tuned and even suggest pushing stylization high.

That matches the early friction. One user hit an "Unknown version: 8" error before Midjourney replied with an access fix pointing them back to the web alpha, and another tester's spaceship texture post said a sci-fi hull texture prompt felt like a regression. For now, the practical constraints are clear in Midjourney's pricing notes: no Relax mode yet, and the premium-quality paths — --hd, --q 4, srefs, and moodboards — are slower and more expensive while the alpha is still being shaped.
